Fixing the Raw Burlap Edges by Covering Them
One problem I've run into with burlap is the raw edges tend to fray. When you've put a lot of work into something only to have it fall apart, it can be discouraging. So, here's one way I've found that works well to keep that raw edge from fraying. Here, I made a small coaster to demonstrate. This is the same method I used for the mini burlap tablecloth I made.
Step 1: Gather your materials. You will need:
- burlap square cut to the size you want it
- netting or other material cut 1 inch longer and wider than burlap square
- cross stitch floss
- needle
- scissors
- hot glue gun
Step 2: Center the burlap on top of the netting.
Step 3: Fold in the corners of the netting. Press them flat on the folds with your fingers and add a dab of hot glue beneath the corner.
Step 4: Fold up the edges and glue these at the corners as well. Be sure that you are tucking in all the netting at the edges to keep it laying flat and looking nice. Press the edges with your fingers along the folds.
Step 5: Sew around the edges using whatever type of stitch you choose. Larger stitches tend to work better with the burlap. I chose to do a simple straight stitch.
And you're done. The most time consuming part was the sewing, and that only took about 5 minutes, so you'll definitely be able to make a lot of these in a short amount of time. These are perfect for setting vases or other table decorations on for a fun rustic flair.
